30 November 2006

I put my application for permanent residency in today. All 100+ pages of it. Woohoo! Now I just have to wait for the results... Hopefully I will know sooner than the 6-12 months they have to tell everyone on the phone...

And it's St Andrew's Day. How very appropriate, kind of.

I love travel, music, books, pictures and people. I don't post mp3s. I do write a journal; you'll find it on livejournal. Although sometimes I write posts here too. But they're for me, so move along now, nothing to see here :)

update:
Hi Emma,
There are several tournaments on the Asia calendar between September-December. Singapore hosts a tournament in mid-September, Hong Kong held a tournament in late October last year and I think they will be hosting another tourney at the same time this year, Manila has a tourney in mid-to-late November, and for the past two years, Vietnam has been hosting a hat tournament in December (last year it was New Years Eve weekend in Saigon and in 2004, it was held in Hanoi around Christmas). Other annual tournaments in Asia are the Shanghai Tournament (usually in early June) and the Bangkok Hat (in mid-February). Check out the links to other Asia teams on
www.beijingultimate.com for more info about the specific tournaments. You can go to any of the tournaments as a pick up player. Send an e-mail to the tourney director and he/she will help you find a team. Teams are always looking to pick up extra female players!

Hi Emma,
Check out www.ultilinks.com if you haven't already.

Here are ones I know from Europe:
Sarnen Hat - Switzerland, sometime in the european summer
Barcelona beach hat - last w/e in October
Portugal beach hat (called bar de peixe) usually in June.
There's also a hat tournament in Hawaii after the Kaimana Klassik (so late Feb, early March). Usually on the Big Island I think.
sarah

hi emma, have a look on
http://www.ultimate.ch/ then go to tournaments (this
is mostly european tournis)
or otherwise:
http://www.ultilinks.com/
on this site you should find all tournaments worldwide
that have been put up, ie registered on that list.

have fun, cheers, rachel
ps: was a great w/e!

Miss Emma,

There is one irregular hat tournament in Estonia. Don't know
anything about it though.

There is also http://www.ultilinks.com. It's not complete, but
a lot of tournaments are up there. They just appear as people
put them up, but I'm sure they have a backlog somewhere. You
probably already have this though. When I'm looking for a
hat tournament somewhere in the world google is my friend, as
are the lists eurodisc and britdisc.

A lot of tournaments like the Barbados hat happen once or twice
and some happen regularly enough, but miss some years. These
may be hard to find.

What are you up to these days?

Cheers,
Wally

Worldwide?
You might try Hats Hops & Hucks in Boulder Creek, California; Maui Hat, Hawaii; Acapulco, Mexico; the Barbados Hat Tournament; the Portugal Beach Hat & the Barcelona Beach Hat. Some have been running for years (14) like HHH & others like Barbados only a couple. Some might not even still be running. Ultilinks.com & upa.org are good sources of all things ultimate, though I don’t know if there would be any UPA sanctioned hat tourneys.
Have fun.
Fee

Portugal has a hat... somewhere in their summertime... sometime....

hearing loss part 2

'spose i'll start a list of bands seen in 2006. wish i'd done this for the last ten years as i'm always forgetting whether i've seen someone or not, mainly at festivals. de rien, pas mal.

1) the brunettes (kiwis. like architecture in helsinki but less irritating)
2) the shins (american. erin and i developed a slight crush on the singer. timmy and sophie thought he was 'special'. hmmmm)
3) cut copy ok so i've given them two chances. they're not good live.
4) franz ferdinand come and dance with me michael
Big Day Out
5) DJ Ben Morris while waiting for the presets. was good
6) The Presets amazing as ever
7) Youth Group sounded great but was in the mood for energy
8) Red Riders sounded good but decided i needed to see gerling for the 3rd time
9) Gerling woohoo! who's your daddy? they're great live.
10) Magic Dirt really good... would see them in a smaller venue. wasn't as excited by them on a main stage
11) The Subways while waiting for sleater-kinney- not as good as at summersonic but the bassist still looks great dancing about on stage
12) Sleater-Kinney brilliant
13) The Magic Numbers actually really good but not my thing. most interesting member to watch on stage was the bassist again. she rocked.
14) Sarah Blasko great, really liked her
15) The Go! Team fun, of course
16) Soulwax good
17) M.I.A. she's great. would never listen to her album, but live she's fantastic
18) Franz Ferdinand ahhhhhhhh
19) Iggy and The Stooges brilliant, they still have something
20) The White Stripes really good, but were better at livid. still worth it though
21) 2 Many DJs brilliant
22) Pivot impressed
23) Deerhoof yep really good.
24) does the dj called Malente count? I'd see him again too
24) Sigur Ros I've decided Malente doesn't count
25) Because of Ghosts
26) Xiu Xiu amazing. unlike on record, where they don't sound so great.

In the meantime I have plenty to keep me occupied with work, music, social life. I suspect I'll be packing on the morning of my flight.

22 November 2005

It's an outpouring.

I'm not jumping ship. I just need space.

There were two different things I was doing with my livejournal, maybe splitting them this way is how I'll do it from now on. This can be the random rubbish, my notebook, and the other one can be the updates on what I'm actually doing with myself. As was originally intended.

I'll see.

Interviewing

Julia: How many times have you overdosed?
Woman: Six. No, wait. I've got six kids. I've overdosed twelve times.

Me: Ever tried ecstasy?
Daily heroin injector: [looks scared] No, I won't touch that. It can kill you!

7th or 8th station, Mt Fuji

Tiffany: I just remembered I'm scared of heights...
Someone else: You might just want to forget that again...

Summersonic part XIV

Bought the Japan only edition of Funeral by the Arcade Fire, almost tripped over a couple of white guys wearing bad bad Spinal Tap gear- skin tight jeans, belts, buckles, big hair- walked off unimpressed then realised that that was probably Louis XIV. Sorry guys, you sucked.

Friday 12th August

You know you're in Japan when you see people running for the train even though they run every three to four minutes.

8.25am, 10th August 2005

Sitting in the departure lounge thingy waiting for my plane. In that do but don't think stage of the morning, no head space available for emotions, daydreams, anything beyond the absolutely necessary. I really don't like handbags.

Darlinghurst Road

A homeless guy lying on the pavement in his blankets waved at me... I waved and smiled back... Smiled and said hello to the rent boy working the wall too. He smiled and said hello back.

This city is different.

l'auberge espagnole

When you first arrive in a city, you see streets, buildings that make no sense. Everything's unknown, virgin. Some day you'll have lived in this city, you'll know these streets by heart. You'll have lived in these buildings and have lived stories with these people... After a while it will all belong to you because you've lived there.

03 May 2005

damn my sister for planting the seed of now raging diabetes paranoia

i don't want to put this up on my proper journal so i will post here, where nobody besides me looks. go me!

so i've seen an improbable number of bands since may (improbable for me, anyway). A friend with a blog decided to see 50 bands before the end of the year, and another friend decided that I too needed to do that because 'it would be fun'. Er, no, I said. But then I found myself changing flights so that I could go to Summersonic, and that was that.

1) bluejuice (australian)
2) devoted few (australian)
3) faker (australian)

upcoming- the shins, franz ferdinand, big day out (2006). Noice, very noice. Is it me or are the Futureheads/Maximo Park/Dead Frenchmen/Kaiser Chiefs the same band? Bet they've never been seen in the same room at the same time. Fishy.

also may not count as didn't see more than a minute's worth on the way past, but: rooster, orange range, mad capsule markets (summersonic); kisschasy (come together)
